Boxing in and tiling around a bath

Boxing in and tiling around a bath

Boxing in and tiling around the bath can be very effective in the family bathroom, and the en-suite too if its big enough. In this bathroom it works well because the tiles are huge and the room is fairly big too, big enough to carry the modular design which means all the grout lines of the tiles match up on the walls and the floor. It also works well because there is only 1 vertical tile on the side of the bath which adds to the effect, lots of smaller tiles lessen the effect but having said that mosaics look great there too. When constructing the boxing its important to use the correct timber, for the framework its got to be 4″ x 2″ or 100mm x 50mm and the covering timber sheeting has to be 3/4″ or 18mm marine ply. The sheeting has then to be treated with a primer that suits the adhesive that is going to be used and then the adhesive has to be flexible. I tiled the rest of this house as its brand new and ill put the pics up of the kitchen floor and the en-suites when I have a little more time...

Herringbone wall tile design

Herringbone wall tile design

Herringbone tiling is almost without doubt the most difficult tile design to fit and when its done on a wall 8 meters long and 2.8 meters high with tiles measuring 10 cm by 30 cm it becomes a bit of a challenge to say the least 🙂 The key to tiling it is to make sure the start is absolutely perfectly flat and then the first rows of tiles have to be fitted with exactly the same spaces, every gap between every tile has to be 3 mm because if its not then as the tile design progresses the gaps will get either bigger or smaller depending on the error, and if that’s not picked up quickly the tiles will have to be taken off and start again, fortunately that didn’t happen here which I guess is one of the advantages of being a tiler for so many...

Tiling a Kitchen Floor in Portlaoise

Tiling a Kitchen Floor in Portlaoise

Tiling a kitchen floor can have a dramatic effect on the look and feel of the whole house, if the tiles are a rustic or older style of tile then that can set the tone of that room and possibly the house too if the kitchen as it often is, is the center of the home. This is how it was in this house until the owners decided to update their tiles and replace the whole floor with a more modern clean looking tile. The tile they chose is ceramic and 45 cm square and the design very similar to Crema Marfil marble, and they also decided to replace the timber floor which used to cover the dining room side of the kitchen with the same tile, but before i could tile the floor i had to remove the existing tiles which in this case wasn’t easy as my kango broke and i had to use a hammer and chisel, that took a while. I’ve always thought tiling the whole floor with the same tile is a great idea as it makes the room look so much bigger and with their choice of tiles much much brighter now too, and the home owners are delighted in their choice of tile too because the kitchen now matches the style of the rest of their home which is very clean looking and modern. All in all this was a happy job with happy customers which makes it all worth while...

Jura Limestone Kitchen Hall & Bathroom Floor Tiling

Jura Limestone Kitchen Hall & Bathroom Floor Tiling

I am a Jura Limestone tiler and I tiled this kitchen hall and bathroom floor with 60cm x 40 cm Jura Limestone polished tiles and it looks just great in this size. The kitchen floor was already tiled with porcelain tiles which had to be removed with a kango and then the floor had to be cleaned so it could be tiled. The customer asked for 2mm spacing which is a good size for this type of natural stone tile so we used 2mm tile spacers which you can see in some of the pictures. When I had finished tiling the floor it had to be washed thoroughly so it was perfectly clean and then I sealed it twice, this is a long process which took a day on its own and then the floor was grouted with pergamon grout and then washed and cleaned again. Its a lot more expensive to have natural stone tiles fitted than ceramic tiles or porcelain tiles because the process is so long, in general it takes twice the time to tile a natural stone floor than it does to fit a creamic ot porcelain tiled floor, but the difference really is amazing because natural stone tiles when fitted and sealed properly are fabulous and with the proper care they always will...

Subway tiles for your kitchen wall

Subway tiles for your kitchen wall

Subway tiles are great for kitchen walls and this is a great choice for this kitchen. The prevoius tiles had been taken off by the home owner so our job was a lot easier than it could have been but it still took all day to tile and grout because this kitchen is huge, its got to be twice the size of most kitchen walls. The tiles are black as you can see and we kept to narrow joints with light grey flexible grout to emphasise the size of the tile, I think its a great choice and more improtant to what I think the customers are...

Fitting a new Bathroom Floor & Suite

Fitting a new Bathroom Floor & Suite

Tiling this bathroom floor was the easy bit, all the rest of it wasn’t though! . The problem was a leak in the toilet cistern which went behind the boxing covering the pipe from the toilet so it went un detected for a long period of time and in that time it soaked the floor so much it rotted the timber and had to be replaced. So fitting a new bathroom floor and Bathroom suite was needed and thats just what we did, and you can see how we did it in the pictures. We removed all the tiles, cut out all of the rotten timber and replaced it with new 18mm Waterproof Ply Board after supporting it properly and then covered the entire floor with 6mm WPB which was screwed at 150mm centers. Then the floor was re-tiled and the sanitary ware was refitted along with a new bath & new bath panels and new boxing for the pipe. The whole job took 3 days but i think youll agree that its looking great now, just like new only with nice tiles on the floor this time, oh and no leaks...

Kitchen & Hall Tiling in Portlaoise

Kitchen & Hall Tiling in Portlaoise

This home in Portlaoise was getting a total makeover from top to bottom and we were asked to tile the Hall, kitchen and back hall in the same tile, a 45x45cm ceramic tile which would be similar in appearance to Crema Marfil marble. In order to save some time and also very importantly money we tiled over the existing tiles which in this case was no problem as they were all securely fixed, and there were also no issues with door heights, but we did just had to remove a few which were high in places. As you can see we filled in the spaces around the outside of the original tiles which made the surface to be tiled smoother and made for a better final finish. The house is nearing completion in these pictures and when the kitchen is fitted ill take another few pictures to show the final job, I think youll agree the tiles are a great choice and transformation is amazing. The tiles are light and bright to reflect all the available light in the house and with the flexible grout they’ll be easy to keep clean...

Kitchen floor tiling Kilcock

Kitchen floor tiling Kilcock

This kitchen floor tiling is in a family home in Kilcock and the kitchen is getting the start of a makeover. The tiles they chose are Imola Cream and they are 45x45cm and look really natural with the matt finish. They’re a tile which looks a lot like Turkish Travertine and were bought in Right Price Tiles, the link is here if you want to check prices etc but they are fantastic value quality. We tiled this in a long day from start to finish, it took a little longer than usual because we had to raise the back door so we could get clearance under it for the tile to fit and for the door to still open. We also took of the kicker boards and cut and refitted them, this always makes for a much neater and more professional finish. All in all the customer is very happy with his choice of tiles and also his choice of tiler which is always good 🙂 , if you would like a quote for tiling in your home please give me a call on 087 3962215 i’m always happy to chat or fill out my contact form here and ill phone you right or mail you back whichever you...

Dublin Tiling a Bathroom

Dublin Tiling a Bathroom

This was a difficult family bathroom in Dublin to tile but it was a very satisfying tiling job to complete because the transformation is so complete. The reason it was tough was because the walls weren’t great but it was so worth it because its looking great now. I think its also worth complimenting the customers here on their choice of tiles, the bathroom is small and the tiles chosen are white on the wall with a subtle pattern and a dark grey non slip R9 rated tile on the floor as they have young children, both are quite large format for a small room but I think you’ll agree the choice is perfect, click on the pics and have a look...

A few small tiling jobs completed

I enjoy the small tiling jobs that can be done in a day or two as much as the bigger ones that can take a few weeks from the start to completion. I guess its the instant gratification from going to a room and changing it completely in just a day or two. I know a whole lot can’t normally be done in less a few days but these are a few pictures of recent jobs that i’ve completed, some done in just a day, call or message me here and i’ll let you know how long it will take me to complete your...
